7.5 week old vet update:

Desta's puppies are almost 8 weeks old and they were at the vet today for a full health examination, their 1st vaccination, and a final deworming before heading off to their new homes this weekend! The vet and all of the staff absolutely *loved* the puppies and their joyful spirits! The puppies were all exceptionally co-operative for their health exam and they were found to be in excellent health!  Here are photos of the puppies waiting for the vet to arrive in the exam room for their appointment:

The puppies were curious about all the new sights and sounds around them, and all of the puppies were excellent for the trip to and from the vet (1.5 hours each way).

At the vet they weighed:

Lola ~ 3 pounds
Teddy ~ 3.2 pounds
Moka ~ 4.4 pounds

These puppies have been a real joy -- so calm, yet so playful, and they simply love life and are ready to share their love and join their new families in a new life of adventures!  They all have Desta's love for "dancing" and almost non-stop tail wagging to go along with their happy little personalities!

They all love to explore outside and they have done an incredible job at getting their potty habits outside.  We recommend taking them outside approximately every hour that they are awake, directly after waking up from a nap/sleep, after eating or drinking, and after a play session.

At this stage, we are feeding the puppies at 8am, 3pm, and again at 8pm. You can adjust this schedule to fit your household, but we recommend at least 4 hours between meals for proper digestion.  Your puppy will go home with a high-calorie paste to use if your puppy goes off his/her food during the transition from our home to yours -- it is a big deal for puppies to leave everything they have known and it can be stressful even if their tails are still wagging!  We have made feeding meals simple for the families taking home a puppy from Desta's litter by providing 2 week's worth of food in individual blocks of frozen meat pre-portioned for their meals. The blocks are approximately 55 grams or 2 ounces and you will need to feed 1 block per meal
(3 blocks per day). If you are transitioning to a new food, please start your puppy's transition after 5-7 days in your home with the remaining week's worth of food.  This will allow your puppy to adjust to your home first without any significant changes, and use the second week's food to slowly transition your puppy to a new food over the course of 7-10 days (you will have enough as you will be increasing the "new food" and decreasing the "previous food").

Desta's puppies have also been doing great with their crate training!  They are currently sleeping from around 10pm to 2am or 3am before needing a potty break
(because they are small puppies with small bladders) and then able to sleep until around 6am to 7am. They have very minimal fuss, and are quite content!

With their joyful nature -- taking photos of this adorable bunch of puppies is literally a split second in time! They want to wiggle and dance towards the camera for cuddles and interaction, but they are such co-operative sweethearts and we know you will love this amazing group photo:

Looking forward to seeing the families again tomorrow when they pick up their puppies!

6 week old puppy update:

Desta's puppies are now 6 weeks old and they are investigating everything with their abounding curiosity for the world around them!  They love to play with toys that squeak or crinkle, and they are all very social!

After a week of rain, today we were blessed with sunshine and we were able to get the puppies outside for their photos, and we also plan to start taking them outside for regular potty time experiences now that they are 6 weeks.  We wanted their first "bona fide" experience of outside to be sunny rather than rain and have it leave a soggy impression -- and we think they enjoyed the sun!

The pups are now weaned from nursing their mom, but they are able to play with Desta while she is wearing a "jumpsuit" to prevent nursing as they are very persistent and Desta is "too good" of a mom to say no. So, we have to advocate for her well-being and use gentle and stress-free methods to prevent further strain on her little body.

We dewormed the puppies again, and you can see their 6-week weights below:

Desta's puppies had their *first* bath early this afternoon and they did incredibly well with the experience!  They didn't mind the water and they were all very co-operative for the bathing, soaping-up, rinsing-off, and drying.  You can see photos of each puppy's bathing process in the individual galleries below:

Desta's puppies are starting to learn about spending short periods of time in a crate for naps and play, and they will start sleeping in a crate at night over the next couple of weeks.

We have booked the puppies vet appointment for Friday, August 25th, 2023 where they will receive a full health examination, 1st vaccination, and a final deworming before leaving Pleasant Meadows.  You need to make an appointment with your veterinarian for your puppy's next 12-week vaccination around September 22nd, 2023.

It is important to note that because these puppies are "tiny" small-breed puppies -- you never want them to receive more than one vaccination at a time.  Some vets will push for getting 2 different vaccines at a time which can cause over-vaccination in small dogs because there is no "small dog dose" and a tiny Chihuahua is given the same amount of vaccine as a giant Great Dane, and their little bodies cannot handle more than one vaccine at a time.  Please advocate for your puppy and ask your vet to split up their vaccines to have a minimum of 4 weeks between their core vaccines and 2-3 weeks between any other vaccines.

You'll love this adorable video of the puppies first time playing outside:

We also took the opportunity of a bug-free evening to snap some group photos of the puppies:

4 week old puppy update:

Desta and Arlo's puppies are 4 weeks old and they had their first outdoor experience for their photos today!  We kept them on a small blanket as it takes several weeks for a puppy's immune system to develop, and we always err on the side of caution.  They will be able to feel the grass beneath their feet closer to 6 weeks when we start them on their outdoor potty exposure.

The pups were curious about outside, but content to stay on the little blanket thinking that it was the "edge of the world" as such a stark contrast was new to them.

We have been working on introducing the puppies to eating meat, which is *always* a hard task with Desta's puppies as she is an extremely devoted mother who very much likes to sabotage the weaning process by eating the puppies food before they even have a chance to try it!  Desta has done this with all previous litters, so we have to be creative and give the puppies food every time Desta is outside, or otherwise distracted, or else she will jump in the moment that we are not looking and consume their food.  Desta is a complete joy-bug, and she loves her puppies so much that she wants to keep them all and feed them herself "forever".  So, this is where we tell you it's a lost cause and we're keeping all the puppies ...
only joking, of course!

Puppy choosing will be August 5th to 7th, and we look forward to meeting the families on Desta and Arlo's list and sharing the puppies with them!

We gave the puppies another "mini grooming session" today before their photos and trimmed their nails, wiped them down with puppy wipes, and trimmed the fur in front of their eyes -- they all did great and seemed to remember the experience from their last session and remained very calm and compliant.

They were also dewormed again today and here are their 4-week weights:

'' Callie''

As you can see, we also included the name meanings for the puppies this week.  Those on the list for this litter are not obligated to keep the "ID names" we chose for the puppies (although you are welcome to use them), but we hope that we have inspired you to think about what you plan to call your puppy.  You can come prepared with a name when you choose your puppy at 5-weeks, or let us know a name after you have chosen your puppy, as we will put your puppy's name on their Birth Certificate that is sent home with you at 8-weeks.

All of the puppies are doing well, and they have beautiful budding temperaments!  They are playful and sweet, and yet they have a very relaxed and calm demeanor when we are introducing them to new things, and/or interacting with them -- exactly what we were anticipating based on previous litters!

The puppies received a slightly larger pen today as well -- same style, but almost twice the room and we loaded it up with new interactive toys.  They were very excited about all the changes, but "cool as cucumbers" too!  And they also love the little puppy-sized bed we gave them to cuddle up in, which is also a way to aid in their potty training.  Puppies will often do better when they have a designated sleeping area which encourages them to move away from the bed and over to the potty pad area
(grey pad on the right) and the bed also "fills up space" as further encouragement.  You can also apply this "trick" in your home when you take your puppy home at 8 weeks of age.

We were also able to capture a little video of the puppies in their new pen space, and so we will leave you with seeing them in action for the finale of their 4-week puppy update:

2 week old puppy update:

Desta and Arlo's puppies are now 2 weeks old!  They opened their eyes between 11-13 days old which is earlier than most litters, but normal for what we have seen in Desta's previous litters.  Puppies that open their eyes "earlier than the norm" or even before their other littermates in larger litters, always have an advantage and are more social and more confident puppies.  Puppies grow and change physically, mentally, and emotionally every single day, and so those extra few days of sight really do make a huge difference in how puppies perceive their world with all their senses.

Along with gaining vision, the ears also open at the same time, so the puppies are able to hear, see, touch, taste, and smell!  Over the next couple of weeks we will be introducing the puppies to many different toys of various shapes, sizes, colours, and textures to enrich their intellect and stimulate their curiosity.

The puppies were mostly sleeping on the photo set as they were so comfortable and relaxed
(common in puppies that open their eyes early) once they observed all the colours of the photo backdrop.

Desta is a devoted mother and she has fed her puppies well due to an ample supply of milk, and they are all thriving with her loving care!

Before their photos today, we trimmed the puppies nails, along with the fur in front of their eyes as a foundation to their grooming desensitization that will help them throughout their lives.  And the puppies were also dewormed today, and you can see their weights below, along with their time of birth which we added for your curiosity:
(we also gave each puppy an ID name)

'Alora''

Time of Birth: 12:27 AM

1 pound & 2.5 ounces

'' Rory''

Time of Birth: 1:27 AM

1 pound & 6.5 ounces

'' Callie''

Time of Birth: 1:44 AM

1 pound & 10 ounces

As the puppies build up their muscle strength on Desta's rich milk, they will soon be taking wobbly steps around the whelping box now that they can see where they are going!

Puppies do a lot of sleeping at this stage -- they literally grow while they sleep!

We have a video of the puppies with Desta for you to enjoy this week:

In the e-mail for the puppies 2-week update, the families on this list will find the link and password for our "Taking Home Puppy Instructional" which helps prepare you for adding a puppy to your home, and gives you useful tips and information about feeding, diet, health, training, grooming, and more!

We will be in touch with families on the list soon for the puppy-choosing schedule -- please be patient as we work our way down the list to schedule you in for a visit or Skype video call!

Our next scheduled puppy update will be when the puppies turn 4 weeks old on:

Monday, July 31st, 2023

Here are a couple extra candid photos of Desta with her puppies to sign off their 2-week update:

Birth Announcement:

Desta has given birth to 3 beautiful puppies on June 3rd, 2023. They were born between 12:27 and 1:44 AM and Desta had a smooth and fast delivery!  Mom and puppies are doing well and the puppies are very content as we are used to seeing in Desta's past puppies.  There are 2 Parti-coloured girls and 1 Abstract boy -- the two girls patches will darken over time (it's normal for parti-colours to be born light), and their ruby colouration should match their mom and brother's shade as they grow.  One girl has overall patches, and the other girl has patches around her ears.

Desta's smile says it all -- she is such a joyful mom and her past puppies have always received her happy nature!

The puppies are nursing well, and all three are very strong and thriving under Desta's care -- she is a very devoted mother and she keeps a watchful eye on their every move ensuring that they don't stray too far from her side!

We look forward to watching these little sweethearts grow -- Desta's puppies are always much anticipated, and with this being a smaller litter they will be all the more special!

E-mails have been sent to the families on this list requesting deposits to secure their right to choose a puppy.

Our next scheduled update will be when the puppies turn 2 weeks old on
Monday, July 17th, 2023. Here is a closer look at these adorable puppies:

This litter will be "mathematically" close to a 50/50 mix, however, genetically the litter can take on traits from either parent.  The puppies will be VERY similar to an F1 Cavapoo in terms of their overall temperament, with their percentage being close to a Multigen Cavapoo. There will be two fur types possible -- curly coats similar to the Poodle that will be very low shedding and also straighter coats will be low shedding to minimal shedding and maybe somewhere in-between those coat types.

Here is a photo of Desta and Arlo's 2022 litter together:

Desta and Arlo's 2022 Multigen Cavapoos -- 8 weeks -1.jpg

And because no litter is ever exactly the same when dealing with mixed breeds (even from the same parents). Below are photo examples of past litters to show what we anticipate the puppies from Desta and Arlo to look like for approximate fur types and colouration (no black though!).

Photo is of a previous litter from Gloria (a Cavalier) and Arlo's 2021 litter with their puppies sitting on a bench:

Photo of Desmond (retired stud) and Pearl's 2022 litter outside in the snow that is also a good example because Desmond and Arlo are related and had very similar puppies:

Gloria X Arlo 2021 -- 8 week old group photo 2.jpg
Pearl's Litter -- 8 weeks old.jpg

Our information on our Cavapoos 101 page shows the percentage of a "Multigen Double Splash Cavapoo" when our stud Arlo is bred to a purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (Gloria X Arlo 2021).  Desta, is a Cavapoo, in spite of the fact that she looks like a Cavalier and the calculation of 49.5% Cavalier- 50.5% Poodle is correct for the pairing between Desta and Arlo.  It's a "fine line" for their classification, as the pairing between Desta and Arlo will produce puppies that are similar to a Multigen Cavapoo in terms of the percentage between the Cavalier and Poodle, but the fur type and appearance is going to look like and be most similar to the Multigen Double Splash Cavapoo. This will be the second pairing between Desta and Arlo, and the generations of dogs can be done several different ways and you can get drastically different appearances and percentages depending on who each dog is bred to, and it's not always possible to fit a particular pairing into a specific category and that is exactly what has happened.
