Vet visit update:

The puppies were at the vet today and were all found to be in excellent health!  Our vet and staff, plus many onlookers in the waiting room, absolutely fell in love with the puppies when we walked inside!  Here is what was checked on each puppy:

- Eyes (checked for abnormalities or discharge)

- Ears (checked for redness/infection)

- Mouth & throat (checked for gum colour, swallow reflex,)

- Heart (checked for irregular heartbeat patterns)

- Lungs (checked for rhythmic breaths and clarity of lungs)

- Stomach palpitation (checked for any signs of bloating, discomfort, or the presence of a hernia)

- Flexion of joints (checked for fluid movement of joints)

- Postural Reflexes (the "paw flip test" checks for proper neurological function where the paw is flipped under so the pads face upwards towards the belly. This is done to see how quickly the puppy rights it's paw so that the pads are flat on the ground/surface again the way a dog would normally bear weight/stand)

- Equilibrium (checked balance by turning the puppy on it's back to make sure the puppy can roll upright again)

- Temperature (checked for normal body temperature)

- Weight (checked for healthy weight and growth rate)

- Because the puppies were found to be in excellent health -- all of the puppies received their 1st shot which covers Parvovirus, Distemper, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza.

- Dewormed by vet with Strongid T according to weight.

The puppies weights are as follows:

CASPER -- 5.2 LBS (2.4 KG)

WALTER -- 3.2 LBS (1.5 KG)

TAFFY -- 3.8 LBS  (1.7 KG)

SASHA -- 4.1 LBS (1.9 KG)

FREYA -- 4.2 LBS (1.9 KG)

All of the puppies were brave for their shot, no whimpers! Their first shot is considered a booster shot, and your puppy will need to receive their second vaccination about 4 weeks from now (approximately 12 weeks of age). We recommend phoning in advance and booking your appointment with your vet for June 26th (exactly 4 weeks from now).  We also recommend having your puppy dewormed again upon the 12-week visit -- worms are an ongoing reality!

We look forward to seeing everyone when they pick up their puppy!

8 week old update:

Emma's puppies will be 8 weeks old tomorrow on the 22nd, and are ready to go to their new homes!  They are all vibrant, alert, and ready to learn new things!  This past week, we have worked on teaching them to sit for kibbles to encourage mental acuity and a healthy drive to work for their food which teaches manners and reliance on humans -- they all did really well!

They are all eating 1/2 a cup of barely softened kibbles per meal with a few crunchy ones mixed in!  All of them can crunch the kibbles, but it is still a workout for their jaws!  The kibbles only need to be soaked in warm water (on the hotter side) for 5 or so minutes.  We have been feeding them 3 meals daily around 8am, 2pm, and again at 8pm.  And we take away their water around 9pm which is an hour prior to bedtime in our home so that the puppies have time to eliminate without "replenishing the tank" before bed!  This schedule can be adjusted to suit your household needs, it simply is what we do here.  Having the meals fairly evenly spread is the most important.

All of the puppies have successfully gone pee and poo while on their outside adventures!  They love chewing on the grass, rolling in it and feeling it's coolness on their bellies!  They have heard all sorts of birds, horses neighing, traffic noises, and have seen the trees and grass blowing in the breezes.  It has been a full week of new sights and sounds!

Emma's puppies have all done very well on their crate training -- they go into the crate all by themselves to sleep at night.  No coaxing necessary!

If you have not already had a chance to read it -- check out the Puppy is Home! Now What? page:

https://www.pleasantmeadowscanada.com/puppy-is-home-now-what

The puppies will be at the vet tomorrow for their first shot, full health examination, and final deworming while here at Pleasant Meadows.  We will post an update regarding their vet appointment tomorrow.  Casper's family, who will be flying here tomorrow morning all the way from Alberta to take Casper home as carry-on in the plane, will be with us to for a long overdue visit afterwards, so the vet update will probably be posted by late afternoon to supper time.

Below is a group photo of the puppies and a final video of them playing outside!

Bonus update:

We wanted to share with you "the power of crate security"!  We introduced the puppies to the crate yesterday morning and the puppies spent the day being able to run in and out playing through the open crate door and have little naps inside.  This morning (only 1 day later), the puppies from both Emma and Gloria's litters all went inside the crate for their after-breakfast nap because it is a safe and secure place for them.  We know it is hard to see each individual puppy in the maze -- but all 12 puppies (both litters combined) are comfortably nestled together in the crate all of their own free choice.  The crate is often seen as "locking them away" and for this reason people are hesitant to crate train because they think their puppy will hate the crate and hate them for using it.  But, as you can clearly see, the puppies feel safe and secure in the crate -- it is like a den!  The first few nights in your home may be interrupted with whimpers from your new little puppy, however, it is not the crate that is upsetting them, it is the fact that they are alone and in a new place away from their siblings and mother and everything they knew prior to leaving Pleasant Meadows.  Place the crate in your bedroom, or sleep next to the crate in a room of your choice -- this will give your puppy comfort in it's new home and help your puppy through the first few nights!  And be sure to include a few stuffed animals/toys for your puppy in the crate as it also provides comfort when they can snuggle up to another "thing" like they would have done with siblings. And as a reminder, we will be sending you home with a toy and a blanket with mom and littermates scent!

6 week old update:

The puppies are now 6 weeks old and everyone on the list has chosen their puppy.  Congratulations!

The puppies are now in their "ready-to-go-home" pen which has an extension on it to include a wire crate where the puppies can both play and sleep.

The puppies are now fully weaned from Emma and devouring the mixture of moistened kibbles and added canned food.  Each of them loves meal times which is steadily being scheduled to morning, afternoon, and evening meals. We will also be trying the puppies on harder kibbles to get them used to crunching them and strengthening their jaw muscles!   By the time the puppies go to their new homes they will be eating three meals per day around 8 am, 2-3 pm, and around 7 pm.

The puppies have been real champions in the area of potty training, as they are 100% pee-pad trained to date!  Now that the nice weather is here we will be introducing them to the outside world over the next 2 weeks while still here at Pleasant Meadows so that they can have opportunities to go to the bathroom in the grass and to familiarize themselves to the sensation of grass underfoot as well as the sights and sounds of the outdoors.

Update 6 week old photos have been posted as well as a lengthy video of the puppies which begins last week and progresses to new footage of them in their larger "ready-to-go-home" pen area.  You will notice that we had a number of background sounds in the video. Firstly we had Monsters Inc. in last week's footage, and fireworks, vacuum cleaning, city sounds, playground sounds, and thunderstorms were the background sounds in this week's video (the second half of the video posted) in order to expose the puppies to a variety of sounds that they will experience once they are with their new families.  We were very impressed with how the puppies handled hearing the fireworks and the children playing!  Enjoy the photos and video!

4 week old update:

Emma's puppies are now 4 weeks old!  They are active and vibrant and love to play with each other!  They also have puppy "play dates" with Gloria's puppies too!  The litter is developing to be very calm and confident puppies and they have adjusted well to each new experience we try with them!

The puppies have been diving into their food bowl this week -- literally!  They absolutely love the canned food, softened kibble, and goats milk slurry that we prepare for them and the puppies need to be wiped down with puppy wipes before their photos.  We also gave the puppies their first grooming experience of being brushed -- they all did great!  Their nails were also trimmed (this is the second trimming), and the puppies also handled it like champions!

Here are some of the puppies milestones this week:

- The Phantom BOY was the first to play with toys -- this is most likely because his eyes were the first to open and he developed his "eye-to-paw" co-ordination sooner.

- The Tri-Colour GIRL, Sasha, was the first puppy to play wrestle with her siblings -- this is most likely because she was the first puppy to walk and built up her confidence.

- The Muted Phantom GIRL, Freya, was the first to dive into the food dish -- and most likely because she was the first puppy to be able to push up into a sitting position which is very stable for eating.

- The Ruby BOY was the most at ease on the photo set -- most likely because he was the second puppy to open his eyes and like the Phantom Boy, he has seen his world a little big longer and adjusted quickly.

- The Ruby Parti BOY was the second puppy to play with his siblings -- this is mostly likely because he was the second puppy to walk and he also gained his confidence sooner.

The puppies are starting to make little play growls and barks which is the next phase in their social learning as a litter.  Puppies will learn their language by playing and interacting with each other just like human babies learn by exploring their world.  Over the next week when their teeth come in will be the start of the "bite and be bitten" stage where puppies learn that if you bite a sibling, they will bite back!  This is a crucial part of their development and learning to understand when "enough is enough" and how to behave socially towards other dogs.

We hope you enjoy this weeks photos and update!

2 week old update:

Hover your mouse over each photo for description or click photo to view larger!

Emma's puppies are now 2 weeks old and they are little explorers!  Their eyes have begun to open and they are currently at varying stages so some puppies look alert, some look like they are squinting, and others look like they are sleeping! But this is a strong litter that doesn't need full eyesight to explore! It took us the better half of the afternoon to get their photos because they would have walked right off the photo set from curiosity!  All of the puppies want to investigate the world around them and are showing an immense amount of intelligence for their age!

Here are some of the puppies milestones this week:

- The Phantom BOY was the first to open his eyes.

- The Tri-Colour GIRL, Sasha, was the first puppy to walk.

- The Muted Phantom GIRL, Freya is the first puppy to be able to push up into a sitting position.

- The Ruby BOY was the second puppy to open his eyes.

- The Ruby Parti BOY was the second puppy to walk.

We will be starting the puppies on goats milk this week as soon as they have all opened their eyes.  This is the very beginning stages of our weaning process that will be a gradual process over the next 4 weeks. At this stage we simply offer the puppies the opportunity to try the goats milk and to begin taking a bit of the strain off Emma to produce so much milk for her growing puppies! You can read more about the weaning process by clicking HERE.

This week's brightly coloured photo set is also the beginning of the puppies visual stimulation.  The 2nd week of a puppies life is pivotal because they can SEE and HEAR for the first time.  So, this week they will begin seeing lots of brightly coloured objects around them and we will also introduce toys once the puppies are more steady on their feet.  Sound is another huge factor and the puppies will be exposed to the sound of our voices and things like rain falling, thunder, radio, etc.

If you are not already doing so, please follow along on our Puppy Timeline: Birth to 8 Weeks for additional details of the socialization process week by week -- click HERE to see!

FYI: We want to clarify that the puppies already named Freya and Sasha, being females, are predetermined to be held for the first person on the waiting list for Emma and Tobi's puppies because she specifically requested 2 female puppies and there are only 2 female puppies within this litter.  Therefore, that is why they are already spoken for and named by their new owner.  This is not a matter of a lapse in procedure or a change in the rules, in fact, it is actually following the rules to a "T".

1 week old bonus update:

We wanted to give a BONUS 1 week old update on how Emma and her puppies are doing after the c-section because it is a huge life event to take place!  The puppies have already doubled in size and are plump and thriving!  Emma is a very attentive mom, and her puppies want for nothing!  The recovery for Emma has been very smooth without any hiccups -- couldn't be more proud of her!

Enjoy these bonus photos of the puppies which clearly show how well they are doing! Click on the photos to enlarge!

Birth announcement:

Emma gave birth to a beautiful litter of 5 puppies via c-section on March 28th @ 3:00 AM. Emma has given us many beautiful litters over the years and it was already predetermined that this would be her last litter, although we did not know that it would end up being a c-section litter.  We had Emma spayed at the same time, so she can enjoy an easy retirement bliss after her puppies are weaned without needing further surgery.  Emma has put her whole heart into every single litter and she truly loves being a mom. This time around, Emma just simply did not progress in labor and we felt it was in her best interest to just "go in" and get the puppies out.

We have given Emma and her puppies time to recover from the anesthetic before announcing this litter, but it has been really hard to keep such a gorgeous litter a secret for the last 24 hours!  The puppies and Emma are both doing very well!  Emma is such a trooper and the puppies are vigorous and nursing well!

Emma has gone out with a bang and given us a rainbow litter for her final litter at Pleasant Meadows -- the puppies are as follows:

Left to Right:

We are so excited for this litter, and can't wait to be able to share them with the families on the waiting list! Two families are returning all the way from Alberta for a second puppy from us, and we couldn't be more thankful to them for the loving homes they have given our puppies and for opening their hearts up again for a second Pleasant Meadows pooch! And it is wonderful to be able to share a new experience with the first time buyers on this list!

Our next update for Emma and Tobi's puppies will be on April 3rd -- so check back here for updates!
