8 week old update:

Reena X Cabello's 2018 puppies -- 8 week

The puppies are turning 8 weeks old on Monday, and it's time for them to go to their new homes!  They are eating approximately 1/4 cup three times a day.  We feed our puppies around 8am, 3pm, and 8pm, but it's simply important to give puppies 3 evenly spaced out meals throughout the day.

They have had another bath today as they get quite grubby diving into their food.  We don't think this litter will have any trouble eating in their new homes!  Because they are a large litter -- they dive right in!

The puppies are sleeping from around 10:00 PM to around 7:00 AM, and so we hope they will continue to be that good when you take them home.  And we will send them home with a scent blanket that has mom and littermates scent on it to help during the first few nights in your home!

All of the puppies are enthusiastic in their play and love human interaction.  They remain the easiest litter to photograph, although video has been the challenge, but we did finally manage to get some video!  So, this update has run a bit late while we got the video uploaded, so here is a video for their final update:

7 & 3/4 week old vet update:

Reena's puppies were at the vet today and were all found to be in excellent health! The puppies did exceptionally well on the vehicle ride!  The whole trip  is 1 hour both ways (2 hours total) and there wasn't even a peep from the puppies, and none of them displayed any signs of motion sickness!  The vet and staff thought the puppies were adorable, and they had many admirers in the waiting room!

Here is what our vet checked on each puppy:

- Eyes (checked for abnormalities or discharge)

- Ears (checked for redness/infection)

- Mouth & throat (checked for gum colour, swallow reflex,)

- Heart (checked for irregular heartbeat patterns)

- Lungs (checked for rhythmic breaths and clarity of lungs)

- Stomach palpitation (checked for any signs of bloating, discomfort, or the presence of a hernia)

- Flexion of joints (checked for fluid movement of joints)

- Postural Reflexes (the "paw flip test" checks for proper neurological function where the paw is flipped under so the pads face upwards towards the belly. This is done to see how quickly the puppy rights it's paw so that the pads are flat on the ground/surface again the way a dog would normally bear weight/stand)

- Equilibrium (checked balance by turning the puppy on it's back to make sure the puppy can roll upright again)

- Temperature (checked for normal body temperature)

- Weight (checked for healthy weight and growth rate)

- Because the puppies were found to be in excellent health -- all of the puppies received their 1st shot which covers Parvovirus, Distemper, Hepatitis CAV2 (also known as Adenovirus), Parainfluenza.

- Dewormed with Strongid T according to weight.

The puppies weights are as follows:

WINNIE -- 3.2 LBS  (1.5 KG)

PEPPER -- 4.1 LBS  (1.9 KG)

MISS WILLOW ANNE -- 3.4 LBS  (1.54 KG)

ASHER -- 4.7 LBS  (2.13 KG)

BEAU -- 4 LBS   (1.8 KG)

LUNA -- 4.3 LBS  (1.95 KG)

The puppies were all pretty brave for their shot, and didn't pay attention to the needle! The puppies were 7 & 3/4 weeks old (4 days shy of 8 weeks). Their first shot is considered a booster shot, and your puppy will need to receive their second vaccination about 4 weeks from now (at 11 & 3/4 weeks of age/nearly 12 weeks). We recommend phoning in advance and booking your appointment with your vet for January 10th (exactly 4 weeks from now).  We also recommend having your puppy dewormed again upon the 12-week visit -- worms are an ongoing reality!

We look forward to seeing everyone when they pick up their puppy!

Be prepared for your puppy's first few nights by reading up on our Puppy is Home, Now What? page:

And you will find plenty of training resources on these links:

We look forward to seeing those attending the "Taking Puppy Home" Session on the Sunday, December 16th at NOON and Monday, December 17th at 11:00 AMPlease leave in plenty of time to ensure safe travels on the winter roads and accommodate traffic to arrive on time for the session. We will be sending you home with an extensive package of puppy information even if you cannot attend the session!

Please, if you have not already done so, let us know when you will be picking up your puppy! We're still waiting to hear from a few families!

Please also remember to bring a blanket or towel for your puppy to travel on your lap on the drive home, and/or a crate for your puppy to ride in!  We recommend using a blanket or towel to give your puppy some bonding time with you on the trip home, and so your puppy is close by for comfort.  The use of the crate can be for if there is not the availability of an adult to hold the puppy, or if you stop for gas, etc. and have to run inside for 5 mins or less.

See you all soon!

8 week photos will be posted on Saturday the 15th!

6 week old update:

Reena X Cabello's 2018 Puppies -- 6 week

Reena's puppies are now 6 weeks old.  They have been introduced to crate training this past week and have been sleeping from around 10:00 PM to 3:00 AM and then falling back to sleep before waking around 7:00 AM!

The puppies are progressing well with their pee pad training and will be having some outside time to expose them to wet grass -- our snow finally melted and the rain has taken over!

We have booked their vet appointment for December 13th where they will receive a complete health examination, their first shot, and additional deworming before leaving Pleasant Meadows.

Today they have had another bath and so they were all fluffed up for their photos! They were most co-operative for their photos and have really grown up this week as you can see in the photos!  They were definitely the easiest litter we have had in all of our 8 years of raising puppies for lining up in a row for their group photo together -- they are pretty chill! Today was a very dull and overcast day and natural light for the photos was non-existent, so we apologize if the photos are a touch dark!

The litter as a whole is very well rounded and super relaxed about everything we introduce to them! Their temperaments are quiet and playful with each other and us, although they are selective with toys at this stage.  They are more people orientated, and more like the Cavalier.  It has thus been hard for us to get a video, as the puppies all want to gravitate towards us for interaction which ends up with puppies around our feet and out of the camera view.  We will keep trying, although we can definitely tell you that all of the puppies will make very snuggly additions to your families!

Now is the time to get ready for your puppy to join your home -- the next 2 weeks will go by quickly!  Please take advantage of the resources we have in place to help you during the first few days and weeks of having your puppy at home.

Please read the Puppy is Home! Now What? page:

And look over the Recommended Dog Food page to see what your puppy has been eating and what is safe for your puppy to eat:

You can also get plenty of training tips including links to puppy training videos from our Puppy Care and Training Tips page:

https://www.pleasantmeadowscanada.com/puppy-care-training-tips  -- there are TONS of resources on this page, so be sure to check them out!

The puppies will be turning 8 weeks old on Monday December 17th. For ease of travel for those who work, we were thinking of letting the puppies go on Sunday December 16th (only 1 day early), so that families do not have to wait until the following weekend to pick up their puppy.

We will be holding a "Taking Puppy Home" session at 10:00 AM, Noon, and 2:00 PM on December 16th pending on when the majority of families can travel for pick upPLEASE let us know if you can attend ONE of those sessions on the 16th, and your puppy can go home with you afterwards.  We hope that everyone will take advantage of one of those session times.  Whether you can attend a session or not -- everyone will receive a written instructional handout that will cover the following topics:

~ The Vehicle Ride Home

~ Meal Time For Your Puppy

~ The First Night Home

~ Crates; Types & Training

~ Potty Training

~ Leash Training

~ Vaccinations & Deworming

~ Types of Toys

~ Basic Training

Please come prepared with a crate for your puppy if you plan to use a crate for vehicle rides in the future or want it as a safety measure, or simply bring a towel or blanket to hold your puppy on your lap for extra bonding time. We recommend a towel or blanket for the puppy to sit on your lap for added comfort when leaving it's siblings, unless you are traveling alone and otherwise should have a puppy in a secured crate.

An update for the puppies vet appointment on Thursday December 13th will be posted later that evening.  Please let us know what time you can come to take advantage of the "Taking Home Puppy" session. Again, the "Taking Home Puppy" sessions will be held at 10:00 AM, Noon, and 2:00 PM on December 16th.

We hope you enjoy the photos!

5 week puppy matches:

4 week update:

Reena's puppies are now 4 weeks old! They have had loads of new experiences and they have all adjusted wonderfully! We moved the puppies downstairs to our living room area yesterday to allow them to start their pee-pad training (so far all are hitting the mark!). Being a larger litter this process needed to start earlier than usual because the whelping box simply wasn't able to contain all 6 pups! And since the litter was moved downstairs earlier than usual, we have been able to start to expose them to all the sights and sounds of a household, and they have truly taken it all in stride!

We have been feeding the puppies 4 meals of softened and mashed kibbled with canned food and goats milk and Reena still nurses the puppies at night time.  But that has to end soon as it is necessary to take the burden off Reena, she is a slender Poodle and it's a lot for her to nurse 6 puppies on her own and so we are doing most of the work for her now with supplementation! Goats milk is the next best thing to Mom's milk for it's nutritional value and digestibility which is why we use it for our puppies! The puppies have also been dewormed once more!

The puppies have really grown into "little dogs" in appearance this week, and their fur  and colouring is starting to really develop.  We've started to see some temperaments emerge and have been taking notes, but this litter as a whole is very relaxed, sweet, and quite food motivated which is great for training!  They are just starting to investigate some toys and take interest in the things around them.  All of the puppies really surprised us for their photo shoot today by how co-operative they were and they were not even startled by the camera flash (which can sometimes happen at this age).

Reena's puppies also slept right through us vacuuming the entire downstairs --  they were not phased at all!  They are quite the chill puppies!

We look forward to sharing the puppies with all the families on the waiting list soon as everyone visits or Skypes with us to choose their puppies!

2 week update:

Reena's puppies are now 2 weeks old! They are able to crawl around the whelping box with ease and are starting to push themselves up on their legs to move! Their eyes are just barely starting to open -- we'll see them open up in the next few days!

Once their eyes open up we'll start to introduce toys that are brightly coloured and of varied shapes.  We have already started to play thunderstorm sounds for the puppies in preparation for their hearing which coincides with their eyes opening around 12-16 days (on average). Two weeks is a big milestone for the puppies because it's when they have a sensory overload when they can finally see and hear!  Our puppies get introduced to as many sights and sounds that we can think of to help desensitize them to the big world around them and prepare them for then they leave around 8 weeks!

We will be starting the puppies on goats milk this week as soon as they have all opened their eyes.  This is the very beginning stages of our weaning process that will be a gradual process over the next 4 weeks. At this stage we simply offer the puppies the opportunity to try the goats milk as an alternative food source to make the weaning process as stress free as possible on our puppies! You can read more about the weaning process by clicking HERE.

If you are not already doing so, please follow along on our Puppy Timeline: Birth to 8 Weeks for additional details of the socialization process week by week -- click HERE to see!

The puppies are all thriving and have doubled their birth weight! Reena is a very devoted Mom who keeps her puppies very well fed.

The phantom puppies are showing more phantom colouring now!  It is an overcast day and we struggled a bit with the lighting to show off the markings on the phantom puppies, but it looks like ALL of the phantoms will have tan eyebrows, and the markings on their cheeks, and legs have gotten brighter as well.  And the ruby puppies have darkened up a bit too!  We finally have their colours sorted out with the new collars we ordered -- in the photos their colours are shown with LITTLE BOWS!  The Girls have them on their HEAD and the Boys have them on their BACK.  They are also listed in the photo gallery above in their birth order -- click once on the larger photo of the gallery to see the photos larger and for a description.

We'll be contacting the families to start to schedule a time to either visit or skype with us around the 5 week mark to choose your puppy.  We'll ask for your patience as we get everyone booked into a time slot in the order in which your names are on the waiting list. And we also want the visits and/or skype calls to benefits the puppies to allow them to have a break between visitors so that you can get a true representation of their temperaments vs an overly tired puppy.  The choosing process may have to extend to 6 weeks depending on everyone's schedule on the waiting list because this is a larger litter.

Birth Announcement:

Reena gave birth to 6 beautiful puppies in the afternoon through to the evening of October 23rd!  We waited a bit longer to send out this birth announcement as it was a bit of an adjustment to have 6 puppies (she only had 3 last year) and she needed some assistance keeping track of them all and making sure they were all nursing.  Reena is getting it figured out and is a good mom who just needed a little help -- who doesn't? :)

In this litter there are 2 BOYS and 4 GIRLS!  And their colours are Ruby and Phantom!  Right now we're using some "spare" puppy collars to tell them apart and we have more on order (so the colours will eventually change), so don't pay too much attention to their colours -- it's just so we can tell who is who at this stage!  We weren't anticipating having so many puppies look like "twins" and so we hadn't placed the order for the new puppy collars on time!  If you click on the photos above in the gallery to enlarge you'll see a Left to Right description of boys and girls according to the line-up in each of photos.

The phantom puppies currently have tan markings on all four legs, on their cheeks/muzzle, and on the underside of their ears and tails.  Eventually, most or all of them will get tan eyebrows as well over the course of the next few weeks.  And the ruby puppies should stay the same shade, but there are never any guarantees when dealing with nature.  If you zip down the to bottom of this page to see Reena's previous litter -- these puppies will look similar to the puppy in the middle and the one on the right.

All of the puppies are nursing well and are quite strong!  They are able to propel themselves around the whelping area with relative ease for newborns!

We're so pleased with this beautiful litter and we know you will be too!
