7.5 week old vet update:

Aurora's puppies will be turning 8 weeks old on Monday, June 5th, and they were at the vet today for their health examination, first vaccination, and final dewormer before leaving Pleasant Meadows over the weekend to allow for ease of travel for their new families.  All of Aurora's puppies were found to be in excellent health and were checked for the following:

-  Eyes  (checked for abnormalities or discharge, and the vet will look at the internal eye with an ophthalmoscope)

-  Ears  (checked for redness/infection or the presence of mites, and the vet will look in the ear with an otoscope)

-  Mouth & throat  (checked for gum colour, swallow reflex, and teeth alignment)

Heart  (checked for irregular heartbeat patterns or murmurs)

-  Lungs  (checked for rhythmic breaths and clarity of lungs)

-  Stomach palpitation  (checked for any signs of bloating, discomfort, or the presence of a hernia)

-  Flexion of joints  (checked for fluid movement of joints in the hips, knees, and elbows)

-  Postural Reflexes  (the "paw flip test" checks for proper neurological function where the paw is flipped under so the pads face upwards towards the belly. This is done to see how quickly the puppy rights it's paw so that the pads are flat on the ground/surface again the way a dog would normally bear weight/stand)

Equilibrium  (checked balance by turning the puppy on it's back to make sure the puppy can roll upright again, and assessing the gait of a puppy)

-  Temperature  (checked for normal body temperature)

-  Weight  (checked for healthy weight and growth rate)

And the puppies received:

-  1st vaccine that covers Parvovirus, Distemper, CAV2-Hepatitis, and Parainfluenza

-  Strongid T dewormer according to weight

Their weights at the vet were as follows:

Sammy -- 6.8 pounds
Theo -- 5.5 pounds
Pony -- 6.6 pounds

And we snapped a few quick photos of the puppies in the waiting room:

The puppies did great for their health exam and they were all calm and easy-going about the whole process which is what we anticipated from Aurora's puppies.  They got lots of comments on how adorable and well behaved they are from our vet, clinic staff, and pet-parent onlookers.

There was very minimal whining on the way to the vet
(2-3 random whines here and there) while riding in the vehicle, and they were quiet the whole time at the vet and slept peacefully on the drive home.

Aurora's puppies are doing great on getting their potty habits outside, but their outdoor experiences have needed to be brief as it's May in Ontario and the black flies are out in *full force* here which makes it extremely unpleasant for us and the puppies to be outside for a mili-second longer than needed!!  The mosquitoes are also pretty bad, so we have only done quick outside adventures before being chased inside by the bugs! Here are some photos of the puppies on one of their quick trips outside:

The puppies did great for their photos in spite of the bugs:

We have thoroughly enjoyed having these easy-going puppies with us, and with this being Aurora's last litter, we are proud again to have such amazing puppies from Aurora and Arlo!  The puppies are highly intelligent and motivated to learn -- they have mastered the "sit" command but in typical "Poodle fashion" (or any high percentage of Poodle mix) they already are thinking ahead on how to get their next treat so remember to wait for them to sit before rewarding their good behaviour!  The Poodle can problem solve, and the Cavalier just wants treats ... so you have a mix that is willing to do anything for a reward!

They have had another bath this week, nail trim, and the fur by their eyes and bum area was also trimmed -- and this is something that needs to be upkept regardless of what hairstyle you choose for your Cavapoo.  Any hair that is in front of the eyes has the potential to scratch the surface of the eyeball, or to simply impede vision.  And with any curly-haired breed, there can be an excess of fur around their bum area which should be trimmed to avoid having any "mess" back there.

With this litter having a Poodle-like coat, we recommend brushing 2-3 times a week and bathing once every 1-3 months depending on how dirty your puppy may get based on outdoor activities.  Cavapoos with a Poodle-like coat also inherit the fur-type often referred to as "human-like-hair" and they have less dander like the Poodle -- but if the natural oils are stripped away from their skin from over-bathing this can cause dry skin/dander.  To combat dry skin, no matter the reason, feeding a good source of fatty acids is a good solution that is also good for your dog's overall health.  A quality hemp oil or krill oil is recommended to feed periodically
(maybe a few weeks on, and a few weeks off).

The puppies are already used to having many of these grooming procedures done, but if you need any help you can always ask your vet or groomer to assist.

We will be sending the puppies home with "Healthy Paws" raw food in frozen patty form.  You will be able to buy this food, or a similar brand with similar ingredients at most of your local pet food stores.  In your Puppy's Starter Kit there will be enough food for 7 days -- the frozen patties are approximately 1 pound each and at the 8-week stage each of Aurora's puppies will eat approximately 1/3 of the patty at each meal.  You can unthaw 1 patty per day for your puppy's daily food consumption: 1/3 in the morning, 1/3 in the afternoon, and 1/3 in the evening.  Here is a visual representation on approximate thirds of a patty:

If your puppy doesn't eat a full 1/3 of a patty -- don't panic! A puppy's eating habits will vary based on how they are handling the change in their environment when they go to a new home (it's stressful even if their tail is wagging). And their activity level will also change when they are no longer chasing after siblings, and they will no longer have competition for their meal portion and won't have the same drive to "scarf it down" so that their sibling doesn't get the food.

Just go with the flow, and allow your puppy to eat when he is ready and whatever amount he is comfortable eating.  A puppy/dog will never starve themselves entirely, however, a puppy does still need to maintain a good blood sugar level which is regulated by their food intake so use the Nutrical High Calorie Gel that will be in your puppy's Starter Kit in the event that your puppy is not eating, or if they are not eating a full meal
(instructions will be in your puppy's kit).

If you plan to change from a raw diet, please start mixing in a high quality non-GMO or Organic dry food/kibble after the 2nd day in your home -- just a few kibbles to start with!  And over the course of the next 7-10 days (because you will have raw-food leftover) start mixing in more kibbles and decreasing the raw food gradually.  With the addition of kibbles, you will be extending the amount of raw food given in your puppy's Starter Kit potentially up to an additional week.  The raw food should be kept frozen until you are ready to unthaw it for your puppy's meals, and it is good for 1-3 days in your fridge depending on how you unthaw it and it's overall heat exposure.

Sometimes puppies will need additional help to keep their stool in "good form" while adjusting to a new home, and especially during a diet change.  Pumpkin puree
(not pie filling) is recommended for adding fibre and firming up their bathroom habits if necessary.

You will also receive a "body condition" chart that will help you determine if your puppy is receiving enough food.  In most cases, you can anticipate needing to increase your puppy's food around 10 weeks of age and gradually increase as needed after that point.

We look forward to seeing the families again at pick up -- here are some extra individual photos of the puppies:

6 week old puppy update:

Aurora and Arlo's puppies are now 6 weeks old!  They enjoyed another outing amongst the grass, garden flowers and foliage, and trees! They sat so contentedly for their photos that we decided to get some photos of them together and they did great!

Aurora's puppies are such sweet puppies, very playful and curious, all unique in their own way, and we couldn't be happier with this beautiful litter!

The puppies are now fully weaned from Aurora, although her big heart would never tell them no, and so they still try to get "sips" every chance they get even though Aurora no longer has milk.  They clean up their food eagerly and have good appetite, but they will forever remain true "momma's boys".

We have started to get the puppies used to spending time in a crate when containment is needed for changing their pen space, and also for naps during the day -- we will extend this to night time as well.

The pups have started to do their potty business outside when we take them out, and they are responding so well to positive reinforcement!

We gave the puppies a bath yesterday, trimmed their nails, and brushed their fur, and they all did great with the experience!  And today, the puppies were dewormed again for their 6 week milestone -- their weights are shown below:

We are so appreciative for the amazing families who will be receiving a puppy from Aurora and Arlo!  We have their 8-week vet appointment booked for:

Thursday, June 1st, 2023

They will receive a full health examination, an additional deworming, and their 1st vaccination.

Please remember to book your puppy's next vaccination for 4 weeks after June 1st which would make it due around  May 29th, 2023.  Some vet clinics are booking up to 1 month in advance, so you don't want to leave this until the last minute!

The puppies individual photos for this week are below to complete their 6-week update with a cuteness overload:

5 week puppy matches:

Puppy choosing has started for Aurora's puppies, and the first family on the list has visited and promptly found out why Aurora and Arlo's puppies are so sought after because they had such a hard time "splitting hairs" to choose between Aurora's darling boys!  It was a great visit and we look forward to the next families meeting the puppies soon!

4 week old puppy update:

Aurora's puppies are now 4 weeks old and they are plump little sweethearts!  With Aurora's attentive care, they are true momma's boys, and at this stage they still much prefer their mom's milk to any other food, but they are slowly starting to try some raw food!  Smaller litters are often "spoiled" by so much milk availability, but their rollie pollie tummies just make them all the more cute!

They were dewormed again today, and had their nails trimmed.  Aurora keeps her puppies squeaky clean and so they haven't needed a bath yet, but we will likely give them one before the 5-week puppy-choosing just for the experience!  We were doing some routine cleaning/maintenance around Pleasant Meadows and the puppies were able to hear the pressure washer today.  Because our puppies are raised in our home, they get to experience "every day life" at random based on what needs to be done, and we captured a small video for you to see:

The puppies weights for this week are as follows:

20230508_114339.jpg

4 week weight: 3 pounds & 5.5 ounces

20230508_114339.jpg

4 week weight: 4 pounds & half an ounce

20230508_114339.jpg

4 week weight: 3 pounds & 11 ounces

Aurora's puppies have been enjoying the natural light in the sunroom and the close proximity of Ceyda's puppies which are still here until pick up time.  They are playing actively with toys and each other and trying out various vocalizations during play, mimicking the older puppies (Ceyda's) within visual range of their pen.

We love what we are seeing in Aurora and Arlo's puppies, and as always with their past litters, these boys are calm, yet playful, and have an easy-going nature with a desire to please!

Outside, Aurora's pups were most compliant for their photo session and this was also their first outdoor exposure in the sunshine, warmth, and spring air!  The puppies were curious about their surroundings, and we will continue to expose them to the outdoors as a start of their outdoor potty training in the coming weeks.  Our goal for our puppies is to allow them to naturally explore and be comfortable outside so that potty training goes more smoothly!

Since their 2-week photos until now -- they have grown so much and look so "grown up" in comparison! We hope the families on the list enjoyed the puppy video e-mailed out a few days ago, and we will leave you with these 4-week update photos:

We look forward to meeting the 3 families on the list who are coming for puppy-choosing this weekend!

2 week old puppy update:

Aurora's 3 little boys, which are actually very well-fed and chunky fellows, are now 2 weeks old!  With Aurora's ample milk supply, her puppies are doing wonderful and are very content and relaxed!  Aurora is a devoted mother with a gentle and calm demeanor, and you can see from their photos this week just where Aurora's puppies get their contented nature.

Aurora is doing great and enjoys being a mom ~ and with only 3 puppies, her boys are going to be spoiled!

We have given the puppies identification names until they are chosen by their new families at 5 weeks of age, at such time their new family can either choose to keep the ID name or come prepared with a name of their choosing for their new puppy. The name will be used to aid in teaching them to sit around 6 weeks of age, and also will be on their personalized Birth Certificate which will be in each puppy's Starter Kit.

The puppies eyes have just begun to open, and so far Ivan's eyes have opened and Luke and Miles' eyes will open shortly within the next day or so -- anywhere from 14-16 days is average.  As can be expected, Ivan was the most curious about the photo sets bright colours and the teddy bear as he could see the new surroundings, but Luke and Miles also investigated the bear as Aurora had played with it prior to the photos being taken and her scent was on it.  Prior to the 2-week-ish mark the puppies senses only consist of taste, touch, and smell -- and now huge changes emerge with vision and hearing as their eyes and ears begin to open!

We have weighed the puppies today for the start of their deworming schedule here at Pleasant Meadows (every 2 weeks).  Their weights and an additional individual photo of each puppy are below:

2 week weight: 2 pounds and 1.5 ounces

2 week weight: 1 pound and 13.5 ounces

2 week weight: 1 pound and 13 ounces

This week we are giving those on Aurora's list the access password to our Taking Home Puppy Online Instructional -- please check your e-mail that was sent out for this 2 week update for login details.  We want to help you be prepared for adding a puppy to your home, and we ask that you please take advantage of the information and resources available to you so that when your puppy arrives it is a smooth transition from our home to yours!

We also have a video of Aurora with her puppies for you to enjoy this week:

In any smaller litter with lots of milk available, the puppies will take a bit longer to start walking as they always have full milk bellies, but Aurora's puppies can crawl around with great strength!

We will post the puppies next scheduled update when they turn 4 weeks old on:

Monday, May 8th, 2023

And we will contact families shortly via e-mail to schedule them for puppy-choosing around 5 weeks of age.

Here is a final photo of Aurora's darling boys:

Birth Announcement:

Aurora has given birth to a beautiful litter of puppies!  Sadly, there were stillborn puppies within this litter and although we tried to revive them -- they were already gone and it was a huge heartbreak for all as we have never had anything like this happen before!  The blessing is that Aurora did give to birth to THREE strong and healthy male puppies!   We have been monitoring the three puppies over the past 5 days to ensure that they are nursing well and that they are 100% healthy because we are conscientious breeders, although stillborn puppies do happen occasionally and there is no cause for concern for the surviving puppies.  Aurora is on puppy-safe antibiotics as a precaution and she is doing well, but she is used to having large litters and so this is a big change for her to only have three puppies to take care of and she needs time to grieve the loss of her other puppies.  We will take some photos of Aurora with her puppies soon, but we are giving her time to adjust and we are giving her lots of additional love and the care needed to ensure that she remains complication-free.

This is evidently not what anyone was anticipating, and we ask for your patience as we ensure that Aurora is coping with the loss.

Aurora's boys are thriving and are such a relaxed trio!  They all have various white markings on their faces, feet, and chest, and there are two Ruby coloured males and one Apricot male.

Please enjoy these adorable photos of the puppies:
